Backslash is proud to announce Surface, the first solo show by Dutch artist Boris Tellegen—better known by his DELTA tag—to be held at the gallery. His installations, wood and paper collages and photographs take the visitor on a journey into a constructed universe where the intersection between the real and the conceptual is anchored in a geometrical style based on reversed perspectives. 

During the 1980s, Delta spent much of his time deconstructing and reforming the letters of his tag, working with the rigor forged during his time as an engineering student. His fractured lettering pointed towards a future governed by the dual notions of phony chaos within controlled order. The artist explains: “My work is about chaos in order, or the order in chaos. Random logic maybe… (…) An important part is trying to find good constraints. A set of borders to work within, and which gives you the need to go deeper instead of wider. The more freedom, the less need to stain your brain.”
Boris Tellegen soon abandoned the streets, the setting for his first works, in favor of the enclosed universe of the exhibition space. Words became his surface and letters faded from view in favor of direction and material in works where light plays across the dimensions to offer new readings of his intricate reliefs.

The surface describes the exterior, or visible, portion of something. In mathematics, to calculate a surface is to assign a measurable quantity, a scope. Boris Tellegen seeks to go deeper, to move beyond this concept, peeling away the surface to find what lies hidden beneath.

After studying industrial design engineering at Delft (Netherlands), the young Boris Tellegen soon started creating his famous deconstructed lettering graffiti. Turning his back on a career in engineering, his works quickly found a home in enclosed spaces, including the Houston Gallery, Seattle (2000), Permspace Gallery, Tokyo (2003), Elms Lesters Gallery, London (2008), Fondation Cartier, Paris (2009), De Fabriek, Eindhoven, (2010) and the Kunstraum in Basel (2011).

Backslash est fière d’annoncer Surface, la première exposition personnelle à la galerie de l’artiste néerlandais Boris Tellegen, plus connu sous le pseudonyme de Delta. Ses installations, ses collages de bois et de papiers et ses photographies promènent le visiteur dans un univers de construction où l’interstice entre le réel et le conceptuel s’associe à un style géométrique de perspectives inversées. 

Dans les années 1980, Delta destructure les lettres de son pseudo et les démultiplie dans une rigueur propre à ses études d’ingénieur. Les lettrages se brisent et annoncent déjà une direction future vers la notion double de chaos factice au sein d’un ordonnancement maîtrisé. L’artiste explique:  «  Mon travail parle du chaos au milieu de l’ordre, ou de l’ordre dans le chaos. Il faut peut-être y voir une sorte de logique aléatoire, ce qui est paradoxal. (…) Les contraintes idéales sont comme des frontières à l’intérieur desquelles tu peux évoluer, et qui te poussent à approfondir plutôt qu’à te disperser. Plus il ya de liberté, moins il y a besoin de se triturer l’esprit.  » 
La rue, annoncée comme un premier terrain d’expression, se trouve bientôt substituée par l’univers clos de l’espace d’exposition. Le mot devient alors surface et les lettres s’effacent pour laisser place à la direction et à la matière à travers des œuvres où la lumière vient jouer sur les dimensions et offre une nouvelle phase de lecture des reliefs.

La surface décrit la partie extérieure ou visible de quelque chose. En mathématiques, calculer son aire, c’est donner sa grandeur, son étendue. Boris Tellegen veut voir plus loin et surpasser ce concept en grattant la surface afin de déceler ce qui se trouve caché derrière. 

Formé à l’Industrial Design Engineering de Delft (Pays-Bas), Boris Tellegen commence très jeune le travail en extérieur avec ses célèbres graffitis de lettres destructurées. Renonçant à une carrière d’ingénieur, ses œuvres s’exposent rapidement en espaces clos, notamment à la Houston Gallery de Seattle (2000), la Permspace Gallery de Tokyo (2003), la Elms Lesters Gallery de Londres (2008), la Fondation Cartier (2009), De Fabriek à Eindhoven, Pays-Bas (2010) ou encore au Kunstraum à Bâle, Suisse (2011).
