The Backslash gallery is proud to announce Backstage, a new exhibition curated by Mathieu Mercier. The artist has chosen to put together a group of visual artists, stylists, architects and graphic designers who have worked with him in the past. Their theme is the relationship to space, a relationship expressed via the different backgrounds of each artist.
The artists featured are part of a new generation whose introduction into the world of art is often closely linked to sponsorship by an established figure. The exhibition's mission is therefore in the tradition of the secular system of artistic instruction, even though Mathieu Mercier does not refer to a master-to-student relationship, but rather an exchange between two generations. The pieces on display will reflect the conversations and contacts he has had with each of them. He will play a unifying role within the exhibition, connecting the young artists together, and will also show some of his own works.
The exhibition is based on the relationship to objects — objects of consumption in particular — and the way they are produced. The featured works are governed by the domestic dimension they each have. Viewers find themselves thrust into the universe of private life by means of several series that reflect the heritage of artistic avant-garde movements, with a special nod to Duchamp.
The artists included in the exhibition come from various art schools in France, Italy and Switzerland.
Mathieu Mercier is a French visual artist born in 1970. He was awarded the Marcel Duchamp prize in 2003.
In addition to his work as an artist, he is often asked to curate exhibitions, including at the Fondation Ricard and FRAC Basse-Normandie.
Mathieu Mercier's work will be the subject of a major personal exhibition at the CREDAC in Ivry, opening on 20 January 2012.

La galerie Backslash est fière d’annoncer l’exposition Backstage (retour de stage) dont le commissariat a été confié à Mathieu Mercier. L’artiste a choisi de réunir autour de lui les plasticiens, stylistes, architectes et graphistes, ayant travaillé avec lui par le passé, autour du thème de la relation à l’espace exprimé à travers les formations de chacun.
Les artistes présentés participent de cette nouvelle génération dont l’insertion dans le monde de l’art est souvent étroitement liée au parrainage d’une personnalité plus établie. Ainsi, le propos de ce commissariat s’inscrit dans le système séculaire de l’enseignement artistique même si Mathieu Mercier n’y revendique pas une relation de maître à élève, mais plutôt un échange entre deux générations. Les pièces montrées seront le reflet des conversations et des accointances qu’il a eu avec chacun d’entre eux. Au sein de ce commissariat, il sera le fil conducteur entre ces jeunes artistes, montrant également quelques-unes de ses propres œuvres.
L’exposition s’articule autour de la relation à l’objet, et plus particulièrement l’objet de consommation, et son mode de production. Les œuvres présentées relèvent de la dimension domestique de chacune d’entre elles. Le spectateur se trouve plongé dans le cadre de la vie privée, à travers plusieurs ensembles qui se répondent dans l’héritage des avant-gardes artistiques, notamment l’héritage duchampien.
Les artistes présentés sont issus de diverses écoles d’art à travers la France, l’Italie et la Suisse.
Mathieu Mercier est un plasticien français né en 1970. Il a reçu le prix Marcel Duchamp en 2003. Parallèlement à son travail d’artiste, il est souvent appelé à proposer des commissariats d’expositions, notamment à la Fondation Ricard ou encore au FRAC Basse-Normandie.
A partir du 20 janvier, le travail de Mathieu Mercier fera l’objet d’une importante exposition personnelle au CREDAC d’Ivry.
