Backslash gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Object Permanence, the first solo show in France by American artist Michael Zelehoski. Zelehoski challenges our perception of the physical world by collapsing found objects into pictorial space. The resulting compositions can be representational or abstract but always imbue the humble, utilitarian objects that he appropriates with new perspective and significance.

Object Permanence will involve a series of dynamic works created from materials found on the streets of New York City and upstate New York. To create these complex assemblages, the artist has cut and joined the found materials sometimes hundreds of times, inlaying them within planes of black or white that traverse positive and negative space. The compositional fragments are tied together, literally and conceptually, by tensed cable, which disrupts traditional spatial delineations by transforming the actual into the graphic and vice versa.

This duality between three-dimensional reality and two-dimensional representation is at the crux of Zelehoski’s work; it points to a deeper reconciliation of mind and reality. Object Permanence unhinges the fixed reality of objects, unveiling instead their dynamic existence born within the perceptive faculties of our minds. The very act of visualization involves a mental process of isolation and abstraction that turns the perceived object into an archetype. Zelehoski’s work is a literal manifestation of this phenomena in which every object remains unique. By distilling an object in the picture plane, it becomes both a projection of reality as well his mental image of it. When confronting the object – now autonomous from the rest of space and abstracted by the artist’s creative lens – we re-evaluate not only its aesthetic significance, but also the aesthetic potential of yet-to-be-found objects outside of the gallery.

Zelehoski has been working in this direction for almost a decade. His return to the United States after years in South America coincided with the collapse of his early sculptural work into two-dimensional space. He has since exhibited on four continents. He has received a variety of awards for his work, including from the Staten Island Museum and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

His monumental work, Open House, has just been added to the permanent collection at the Centre Pompidou - National Museum of Modern Art in Paris.

Backslash Gallery est heureuse d'annoncer la première exposition personnelle de l'artiste américain Michael Zelehoski en France, Object Permanence. Le plasticien défie notre perception du monde physique en confondant des objets trouvés au sein de l'espace pictural. Les compositions finales, soit figuratives soit abstraites, respectent toujours les objets fonctionnels et modestes que l'artiste s'approprie à travers une perspective inédite et une signification nouvelle.

Object Permanence propose une série d'œuvres réalisées à partir de matériel trouvé dans les rues de New York et plus au nord de l'état. Afin de créer ces assemblages complexes, Michael Zelehoski découpe et assemble les matériaux, parfois des centaines de fois, puis les incruste dans des surfaces planes noires ou blanches qui traversent l'espace positif et négatif. Les fragments sont liés ensemble, de façon littérale et conceptuelle, par des câbles tendus, ce qui perturbe les délimitations de l'espace traditionnel et transforme le réel vers le graphique et vice versa.

La dualité entre la réalité tridimensionnelle et la représentation bidimensionnelle est au centre des recherches de Michael Zelehoski et suggère une réconciliation plus profonde entre l'esprit et la réalité. Object Permanence déstabilise la réalité fixe des objets et dévoile à la place leur existence dynamique née par le biais des facultés perceptives de nos esprits. L'acte de visualisation implique un processus mental d'isolation et d'abstraction qui transforme l'objet perçu en archétype.

Le travail de Michael Zelehoski est une expression littérale de ce phénomène dans lequel chaque objet reste unique. En répartissant un objet sur la surface picturale, ce dernier devient à la fois une projection de la réalité et sa propre image mentale. En nous confrontant à l'objet – désormais autonome du reste de l'espace et rendu abstrait par l'œil créatif de l'artiste – nous ré-évaluons non seulement sa signification esthétique mais également le potentiel esthétique de l'objet prêt à être trouvé en dehors de la galerie.

Michael Zelehoski travaille dans cette direction depuis une dizaine d'années. Son retour aux Etats-Unis après 6 ans en Amérique latine coïncide avec la retombée littérale de son travail sculptural dans la représentation en deux dimensions. Son travail a été exposé dans le monde entier et a reçu de nombreux prix, notamment celui du Staten Island Museum ou encore celui du Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Son installation monumentale, Open House, vient de rejoindre les collections du Centre Pompidou – Musée National d'Art Moderne.
