The work of Xavier Theunis (b. 1978, Anderlecht) lies at the crossroads of architecture, design and contemporary art. Through a minimalist, conceptual approach, he uses industrial materials (sometimes recycled) and questions our relationship with the objects and images that surround us, infusing them with a subtle, offbeat sense of humor.

Half en Half, his third exhibition at Backslash, is named after a Brussels cocktail that translates to "half and half". Acidic and sweet ingredients mixed to create a more balanced bouquet. Whether in intention, realization or scenography, Theunis suggests that the artistic experience could also be a way of accommodating contrasting elements. The exhibition showcases images in which a variety of colors, treatments and gestures are combined in a way that is at times adherent and at other times fractured. Through his collages, photographs and installations, forms are shifted and blurred; mixed to the point where they end up standing - facing the eye - in an interval, between surface and depth. It is hard to say which came first, the plane or the perspective. Using a vocabulary of lines and textures and precise gestures of deconstruction, he seeks to achieve a certain effect of disorientation. In the end, this effect takes us back to a place that feels at the same time unknown and familiar, suspended in-between time, like a homeland to be discovered. Xavier Theunis's work has been shown in many countries and can be found in prestigious collections such as Nice's MAMAC and Monaco's Nouveau Musée National.

Le travail de Xavier Theunis (né en 1978 à Anderlecht) se situe à la croisée de l’architecture, du design et de l’art contemporain. À travers une approche minimaliste et conceptuelle, il utilise des matériaux industriels (parfois issus de récupération) et interroge notre rapport aux objets et aux images qui nous entourent, en y insufflant une note d’humour subtile et décalée.

Half en Half, sa troisième exposition à Backslash, porte le nom d'un cocktail Bruxellois que l'on peut traduire par "moitié-moitié". Des ingrédients acides et édulcorés s'y mélangent pour donner un bouquet plus équilibré. Qu'il s'agisse de l'intention, de la facture comme de la scénographie, Theunis suggère que l'expérience artistique peut aussi être une manière d'accommoder des éléments contrastés. L'exposition laisse place à des images où la variété de couleurs, de traitements et de gestes se combinent tantôt par adhérence et tantôt par rupture. À travers ses collages, photographies, installations, les formes sont décalées et brouillées ; mélangées jusqu’au point où elles finissent par se tenir - face au regard - dans un intervalle, entre surface et profondeur. On ne saurait dire, du plan ou de la perspective, qui a commencé. Cherchant dans un vocabulaire de lignes et de textures, par des gestes précis de déconstruction, un certain effet de désorientation. Un effet qui nous ramène, in fine, vers un lieu qui serait à la fois inconnu et familier, un entre-temps suspendu ; quelque chose comme un pays à soi. Le travail de Xavier Theunis a été montré dans de nombreux pays et est présent dans des collections prestigieuses dont le MAMAC de Nice ou encore le Nouveau Musée National de Monaco.
